About the Landscape Industry
Who We Are
The industry is comprised of companies that specialize in lawn care, landscape design, landscape maintenance, irrigation and water management, tree care, and the design, build and installation of decks, patios, walkways and outdoor living spaces. Many companies offer additional services like snow removal, holiday lighting, and interior plant design and installation. Industry companies range in size from small businesses with a handful of employees, to billion dollar firms that have multiple branches in different states. According to the Lawn and Landscape Magazine State of the Industry Report 2014, the average annual company revenue is $1 million. Industry professionals also work as groundskeepers, parks and forestry experts, and as horticulture experts at botanical gardens, zoos, and more.

What We Do
The industry designs, builds, and maintains healthy green spaces in communities across the country. These spaces include backyards, sports fields, parks, gardens, green roofs, and the grounds around office buildings, hospitals, schools and other facilities. The industry is comprised of a wide range of specialists, including arborists, lawn care specialists, landscape and irrigation designers and technicians, account managers, sales staff, and sustainability experts. Some firms focus on either residential design and maintenance, or commercial design and maintenance.
According to the IBIS Market Research Report for Landscape Services in the United States (July 2015), the landscape industry produces an annual revenue of $76 billion, comprises 466,768 businesses, and employs 958,711 workers. In its May 2014 Occupational and Wages Report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are 868,770 landscaping and groundskeeping workers and an additional 101,190 supervisors comprising a workforce of approximately 969,960 employees.
The 2012 Business Census report for the landscape services industry determines that there are 578,970 employees in the industry with an average company revenue of nearly $600,000 annually, with an average of 6 employees, with the vast number of businesses being small businesses, employing 1-4 employees.
The landscaping industry also supports a large manufacturing segment of the economy that supplies the necessary machinery and equipment and other materials like concrete pavers, plant material, etc.

Thousands of students graduate each year from 2-year and 4-year college horticulture and landscape programs and join the industry. They are trained in business development, marketing and sales, horticulture, and landscape design and maintenance.
Even though the industry upwards of 1 million workers there is still a chronic shortage of qualified employees at all levels from lawn care and landscape technicians and managers to landscape designers and sustainability experts. The industry needs more qualified workers to meet the demand.
